S&P Dow Jones Indices (SPDJI) has postponed the quarterly rebalance for its equity indices as a result of the recent period of market volatility

caused by the coronavirus

In a note to clients seen by ETF Stream, SPDJI said all equity indices scheduled to carry out a quarterly rebalance before 23 March have been postponed.

The firm has not yet specified when the rebalances will take place.

Other factors leading to this decision included the circuit breakers that were triggered twice last week in the US, pausing trading on the NYSE, as well as exchange closures.

The postponement impacts the indices' investible weight factor (IWF) for shares outstanding, membership changes such as additions or drops from indices, and capping constraints depending on the diversification requirements per index.

SPDJI said in a statement: “We believe this was a prudent step as we thoroughly assess how we can best support our clients and manage our indices during this period of extreme global market volatility and market disruptions.”
