Managing the fixed income bucket of portfolios is currently one of the toughest challenges for investors given the recent spike in US inflation and the majority of developed market government bonds negative yielding.

Despite the challenges, the fixed income ETF market has developed dramatically over the past few years with investors more confident about the way ETFs trade especially during periods of market stress following the liquidity crunch in March 2020.

This event is set to explore the key issues facing investors from a fixed income perspective including:

  • The current macro environment
  • New ideas in the search for yield
  • Selection and innovation with bond ETFs
  • The rise of fixed income ESG ETFs

Big Call: Fixed Income ETFs is exclusively open to professional investors in Europe including wealth managers, family offices, private banks and institutions and attendance is subject to approval by ETF Stream.

Panel: Inflation and central banks: How investors should navigate bond markets

With US inflation data spiking to its highest level since 2008, how the Federal Reserve reacts will be crucial in the months to come. Tighten monetary policy too quick and markets could see a taper tantrum similar to 2013, however, too slow and the economy could overheat. This panel will analyse the key issues facing markets over the next 12 months along with a look at how investors should be positioned within the fixed income bucket of their portfolios.

Panel: New ideas in the search for yield

The perils of running a multi-asset portfolio in this low return environment have been well documented. With a large portion of the developed market negative yielding, investors are looking to more esoteric parts of the market for more attractive returns. This session will explore new ways investors can approach the never-ending search for a greater risk-return profile.

14:00 - 14:35

Panel: Fixed income ETFs: Selection and innovation in focus

Fixed income ETFs have soared in recent years with the market now totalling $375bn assets under management (AUM), however, many predict this will be the biggest growth asset class in the ETF space due to the sheer size of the bond market. What are the key factors to take into account when navigating the fixed income ETF market and where is further innovation needed?

14:35 - 15:10

Panel: Fixed income ESG ETFs: Time to boom?

The fixed income ESG ETF market is booming in Europe as inflows outpace regular fixed income ETFs this year. There is a strong argument to say incorporating ESG criteria can make portfolios more resilient to credit rating downgrades and defaults, however, questions around the genuine impact fixed income ESG ETFs can have without a vote remain. The tiny market has the potential for rapid growth however what factors will be driving this uptake?
