BNP Paribas Asset Management has hired John Altas from BlackRock for the newly-created role of ETF specialist for the Nordics region.

Based in Stockholm, Altas will report functionally to BNPP AM’s regional ETF head of sales for Northern Europe Claus Hecher and head of distribution for the Nordic region Morten Bentsen.

In the new role, he will develop the company’s ETF client base in Nordic countries, with a focus on sustainable ETFs and index products.

He joins from BlackRock, where he spent five years as vice president, relationship manager, based in Stockholm.

Prior to this, he spent five years in sales roles at Swedish corporate bank SEB, with a focus on asset management and securities and wealth operations.

Commenting on the hire, Bentson said: “John’s appointment is another step in the continued strengthening of our position in the Nordic region, where investors’ global leadership in sustainability is fully aligned with BNPP AM’s core values.

“John’s experience will be key as we bring a broader range of sustainable and thematic solutions to our regional client base.”

Hecher added: “Growing client demand for ESG ETFs has led to strong growth for BNPP AM’s thematic and sustainable index solutions business in several European countries.

“We are building on this momentum and John’s appointment is instrumental to our expansion in the Nordic region.”

The new hire continues a period of expansion for the firm after ETF Stream revealed its plans to begin domiciling ETFs in Ireland earlier this month.

Last October, BNPP AM hired Jérémy Tubiana as head of ETF and index solutions development from Amundi to expand its ETF and index franchise across French-speaking markets.

The firm booked €4.7bn inflows in 2022, the joint strongest flow per ETF after BlackRock and Vanguard, taking its assets under management (AUM) to €26.3bn.
