Desperate issuers; stupid ideas

ETF issuers have become so desperate to stand out from the crowd that they've resorted to bringing in ETFS that are basically cons. The Quincy Jones ETF illustrates the point. The product is just a mundane tech ETF. Quincy's name is attached as a marketing exercise. It's not clear that Quincy himself wants anything to do with the product.

The Donald's wall boosts solar ETF

Donald Trump's claim that he'd build a wall that Mexico would pay for was given added flavour when he said that he'd add solar panels, to make it "cheaper for Mexico." While the wall may be no good for Mexico it's been great for the Guggenheim Solar ETF (TAN) which is up more than 20% year-to-date.

Emerging market ETFs - the winners

Emerging market ETFs have been performing brilliantly this year, thanks to solid commodity prices and western central banks printing money, making the higher yields offered in EMs more attractive. So which have performed the best?

  • EMQQ Emerging Markets Internet & E-Commerce ETF EMQQ - Up 38.9% YTD

  • First Trust Chindia ETF FNI - Up 28.2% YTD

  • WisdomTree Emerging Markets ex-State-Owned Enterprise ETF XSOE - Up 24.4% YTD
