BNP Paribas Asset Management (BNPP AM) has expanded its thematic ETF range with the launch of a Paris-aligned climate biodiversity ETF.

The BNP Paribas Easy ESG Eurozone Biodiversity Leaders PAB UCITS ETF is listed on Euronext Paris and Deutsche Boerse with an ongoing charges figure (OCF) of 0.35%.

The ETF tracks the Euronext ESG Eurozone Biodiversity Leaders PAB index which offers exposure to approximately 60 eurozone stocks.

Starting with the Euronext Eurozone 300 index, companies are selected on a best-in-class methodology which retains 30% of each sector based on their potential impact on biodiversity.

The biodiversity score is calculated using Iceberg Data Lab’s Corporate Biodiversity Footprint score.

The ETF also excludes any company in violation of the United Nations Global Compact or in sectors such as controversial weapons, coal mining, uranium, shale gas, or tobacco production.

It is classified as Article 9 under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR).

Denis Panel, head of multi-asset, quantitative and solutions at BNPP AM, said: “A quarter of the planet's species are in danger of disappearing by 2050, and half of the world's GDP is threatened by the progressive degradation of nature.

“This ETF offers clients the opportunity to invest in companies whose potential impact on biodiversity is lower than that of their peers, while adhering to strict requirements regarding the exclusion of fossil fuels and reducing carbon intensity.”

Stéphane Boujnah, chairman of the management board at Euronext, added: “Euronext welcomes the launch of this fund replicating our index, which aims to track a diversified portfolio of eurozone companies while taking into account their biodiversity footprint and being aligned with the Paris Agreement.”

This is the latest ETF in BNPP AM’s thematic line-up. In March, the French asset manager unveiled medical technology and hydrogen economy ESG ETFs, the BNP Paribas Easy ECPI Global ESG Med Tech UCITS ETF and BNP Paribas Easy ECPI Global Hydrogen Economy UCITS ETF.

Thematic ETFs have been a big focus for ETF issuers this month. BlackRock also launched a thematic ETF today, the iShares Blockchain Technology UCITS ETF (BLKC), offering exposure to blockchain companies.
