Defence ETFs get a thematic makeover for European entry

Two ETFs have launched. Can defence ETFs replicate their multi-billion-dollar US success here in Europe?

Investing in military hardware may be taboo for many of Europe’s ESG flag-bearers, however, the continent’s largest mobilisation since WWII and a bleak market backdrop have seen some thematic ETF issuers turn to the previously unloved industry – albeit with a fresh new look.

While usually viewed as a sector, two phenomena have allowed asset managers to glamourise defence as a future investment opportunity.
