Asset managers turning ‘extremely cautious’ with their sustainable investment disclosures
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) is going through a breakthrough moment, with the EU Action Plan on Sustainable Finance and Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) adding force to the growing tide of green investor sentiment.
Ready to service this demand, European issuers have launched record numbers of core and thematic ESG ETFs so far in 2021. Investors themselves have also not disappointed, pouring €53.4bn assets into the product class during the first eight months of the year – almost half of all inflows – according to data from Bloomberg Intelligence.
This explosive growth has also raised a number of challenges, however, with IOSCO highlighting a lack of standardisation in ESG ratings and data collection, while InfluenceMap found 71% of ESG funds ranked negatively for Paris-alignment.

Can ESG investing be viewed as a factor much like value or low volatility? It is a question that has dominated academic literature and been a subject of fierce debate over the past two decades. This panel will explore the different arguments and assess whether incorporating ESG metrics in portfolios can deliver outperformance over the long term.
Stuart Kirk will explain what it really means to invest sustainably, where the industry is wrong, and how to avoid the pitfalls of this rapidly growing area.
The ESG ETF market has exploded over the past two years with total inflows outpacing non-ESG ETFs in Europe for the first time last year. With issuers launching ESG ETFs at a rapid rate, knowing which strategy to incorporate in a portfolio can be a daunting task. What are the crucial methods of selection and how should ESG ETFs fit within a multi-asset portfolio?
The fixed income ESG ETF space is widely seen as potentially the biggest growth area of the ETF market in Europe. There is an argument that incorporating ESG criteria can make portfolios more resilient to credit rating downgrades and defaults. Is this the case and why is sustainable investing in the bond market becoming so important?
Following the introduction of two climate benchmarks in 2019; the Climate Transition and Paris-Aligned Benchmarks, issuers and index providers alike have released a string of products that offer investors the opportunity to have a positive impact on climate change. However, questions remain as to whether the benchmarks will have the desired effect and if there is demand for these strategies. This session will unwrap the crucial development taking place in the ESG space and assess how these products fit in an investor’s portfolio.
